In Rwanda, potato is a vital food and cash crop for farmers in the northern and western parts of the country where it is grown abundantly. Their production and productivity are currently limited by a lack of timely available good quality seed due to the long sprouting period for some varieties such as kinigi. Farmers do not use transgenic technology that can accelerate sprouting. However, this study was conducted with the target of contributing to the timely availability of potato tuber seed in terms of quantity and quality through the determining appropriate concentration of gibberellic acid that can break dormancy and induce early sprouting. Among the different techniques that can break potato tuber dormancy and induce early sprouting, gibberellic acid was focused on and applied to Kinigi variety. The study was conducted in CAVM TCL in December 2017, four treatments T0, T1, T2 and T3 were undertaken where T0=0ppm, T1= 50ppm, T2= 75ppm and T3= 100ppm of GA3. Hundred soaked potato tubers were stored in boxes in laboratory condition (Temp=18-26oC and RH = 60-65%). On 82nd day data concerned with sprout percentage, sprout number and sprout length were collected and analyzed by using Genstat 14th edition. The result showed that the tuber dipped in 100ppm spouts earlier with the higher number of sprouts and the sprouts were taller in comparison with other treatments. The sprouting percentage was also higher in the 100ppm treatment than in others. About 91%, 73%, 71% and 42% resulted from 100ppm, 75ppm, 50ppm and control respectively. The sprouted tubers were completely randomized in the field to evaluate the effect of GA3 on the emergence rate. Each of the four treatments was replicated three times in the blocks. From the third week to one month and five days, data concerning emergence was taken every week and analysed using Genstat 14th edition. The result showed that tubers treated with 100ppm GA3 emerged at a higher rate. Based on the results obtained permit us to conclude that application of GA3 at 100ppm can be recommended to farmers in order to promote achieve timely availability of good quality potato tuber seeds in Rwanda.
